Faye and Leanne talk through English as a subject area. They cover how it is delivered, what the intention is for it to achieve and what impact it is having in pupils' learning.
Welcome to the English Page!

Keep up with all the amazing learning in English through your child's Seesaw and also our school Facebook page.

The area of English is made up by the three areas of reading, writing and spoken language.  Basic skills in this area are fundamental to our pupils in preparing them for life after Longcause and we place upmost importance on developing and extending these skills in purposeful and realistic ways.

As a working group, we developed our current English curriculum from the 2014 National Curriculum covering outcomes from P Scales through to GCSE. This curriculum takes account of the way in which our pupils learn and we have developed a system where we can recognise every step of progress our pupils make. And they make great progress!!

(for more information on this, please see our curriculum and assessment policy -

To ensure coverage of all of the text types in the National Curriculum we have developed a coverage map for English in Lower, Middle and Upper school. Please see these individual pages for more information on this and how we teach English in these areas.

In addition to English learning across the curriculum, English sessions take place daily. Pupils also engage in reading based learning on a daily basis; we teach phonics to support pupils with reading, as well as shared reading and individual reading. We provide a wide range of reading materials to support pupils with their reading, including fiction and non fiction, and fully decodable and non-decodable texts. Reading is a whole school priority and we measure progress in reading in several ways to get a much more accurate picture of each child as a reader.

At KS4 pupils follow a Functional approach to English and Year 11 pupils will leave with an accredited outcome in English Functional Skills which will range from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2.
