Longcause Community Special School Learning for Life

English

Welcome to the English Page!

The area of English is made up by the three areas of reading, writing and spoken language.  Basic skills in this area are fundamental to our pupils in preparing them for life after Longcause and we place utmost importance on developing and extending these skills in purposeful and realistic ways.

We are excited this year to be introducing Read, Write, Inc as our validated phonics scheme. Our pupils are responding fantastically to this programme and we are already seeing great progress in their reading and writing.

Read, Write, Inc sessions take place at the beginning of the day for an hour. In addition to these, each class has a daily story time to promote a love of reading for pleasure.

At Longcause we recognise reading as a fundamental skill, and therefore reading is a whole school priority. We measure progress in reading in several ways to get a much more accurate picture of each child as a reader.

At KS4 pupils follow a Functional approach to English and Year 11 pupils will leave with an accredited outcome in English Functional Skills which will range from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2.
