Positive Relationships

Welcome to Positive Relationships!

Our Positive Relationships Curriculum Lead is Zoe Preston

zoe.preston@longcause.plymouth.sch.uk

At Longcause, we are following our Positive Relationships scheme which focuses on the following areas:

  • Self awareness
  • Awareness of others
  • Feelings/emotions
  • Mental health
  • Actions and consequences
  • Bullying
  • Safe relationships
  • Conversation skills

Pupils access Positive Relationships lessons once a week. Skills are then rehearsed in real life experiences on a daily basis. Our vision is for pupils to develop a better awareness of themselves so that they can develop meaningful and safe relationships with others.  Throughout their time at Longcause, pupils will develop an understanding of their emotions in order to help them to co-regulate and self-regulate. We encourage pupils to stop, think and feel!

Positive Relationships Intent Statement

Intent:

What will our pupils experience throughout their Positive Relationships curriculum at Longcause?

  • Through the use of the AET Framework, pupils will access a progressive and sequential curriculum which develops their social and emotional skills.

There will be a focus on the following areas:

  • Self-awareness and awareness of others
  • Their feelings/emotions and other people’s feelings and emotions
  • Healthy minds
  • Behaviour of self and others
  • Building positive relationships
  • Conversation skills

  • Pupils  will be given clear information and strategies on how to show safe and socially expected behaviour that is appropriate for their age and stage of development.
  • Pupils will develop their understanding of how to develop positive mental wellbeing and skills for building positive relationships that they can maintain into adulthood.

Why do we want this?

Our main goal is to build our pupils’ self-awareness/self-esteem and teach them how to show socially expected, safe behaviour so that they can build positive relationships and sustain connections with others into and throughout their adult lives.

Implementation:

Our Positive Relationships curriculum progression is taken from the AET framework and curriculum content draws on research from a range of sources which we value as part of our school culture and ethos including Ross Greene (Explosive Child), Talkabout (Alex Kelly), PACE (Daniel Hughes), Daniel Siegal and Social Thinking.

Primary Explorers (and some Secondary Explorers)

-Focusing on functional communication and the early stages of social awareness from the AET framework and SALT plans through daily routines. Pupils are learning the prerequisite skills so that they are able to access the Positive Relationships curriculum when appropriate.

Secondary Explorers, Primary Adventurers, Secondary Adventurers, Pioneers and Year 11’s.

-Positive Relationships lessons are delivered on a weekly basis and learning is recorded on Seesaw.

-Lessons follow an annual coverage map where topics are repeated each year to build skills in priority areas.

-Lessons follow a specific structure which recap previous skills and build on knowledge and vocabulary so that social and emotional learning is explicitly taught. Pupils are given lots of opportunities to talk and role-play social situations within lessons to practise their social skills in a safe and supportive environment before applying skills within daily routines and in real life situations.

Impact:

Pupils will:

  • Improve their ability to regulate and show safe, socially expected behaviour.
  • Develop resilience within themselves and in social interactions.
  • Develop and sustain positive relationships with others.
  • Make progress in their PDP’s (based on the Positive Relationships Curriculum/AET framework) and Big 10.
