Longcause Community Special School Learning for Life

Forest School

Forest school

Through weekly sessions in our Forest schools area every child will access learning and development within the natural world around them. Every child will succeed through inspirational, stimulating, hands on experiences, developing their self-esteem, confidence and responsibility.

At Longcause our ethos is to provide an environment that promotes children to develop a growth mindset. We believe that providing interventions such as Forest schools allows children to work on their independence, resilience, risk taking, taking responsibility, teamwork and communication in addition to their self-esteem and love for the outdoors. In which are all crucial factors that encourage children to develop a growth mindset. We understand and consider that the cultural capitalism of the children we are working may not be as wide as the average neurotypical children of the same age, thus providing them with personalised rich learning opportunities and hands on learning experiences  is a crucial part of our planning and delivering of sessions.

The Forest School approach to learning can be summarised as one which puts the child at the centre of their own learning. It is the child who makes the decisions about which activities to participate in, how to approach and solve problems, what they need to reflect on, what their strengths are and what they want to learn next. This can be a huge learning experience for our children as decision making, problem solving and working together can be difficult. However, all of this is achieved in our richest of classrooms – the outdoors.

Children are given room to have real life experiences. They are encouraged to think ‘outside of the box’; make mistakes, direct their own learning and take risks that are considered out of their comfort zone. All of these factors culminate in producing children who have increased confidence levels, developed independence, raised self-esteem, great communication skills, resilience and high levels of motivation. We want the children to leave Longcause believing that they can achieve anything they set their minds to, whilst we just provide the tools needed for this mindset, the rest is down to them!
