Welcome to the English Page!
Keep up with all the amazing learning in English through your child's Seesaw and also our school Facebook page.
This year's focus for Writing Week was 'British Values'.
Further success at Key Stage 4 with 3 Year 11 pupils entered for GCSE English. Also all of our Year 11 pupils achieved Functional Skills English between entry level 2 and Level 2 (1 pupil at EL2, 5 pupils at EL3, 1 pupil at Level 1 and 3 pupils at Level 2) - Fantastic!
The area of English is made up by the three areas of reading, writing and spoken language. Basic skills in this area are fundamental to our pupils in preparing them for life after Longcause and we place upmost importance on developing and extending these skills in purposeful and realistic ways.
The new National Curriculum in place from September 2014 enabled us to make some key changes to the way we layout our curriculum in core areas such as English. We now have a curriculum in place which takes account of the way in which our pupils learn and we have developed a system where we can recognise every bit of progress our pupils make. And they make great progress!!
(for more information on changes made with the new National Curriculum and how these are more beneficial for the learning of our pupils in all subject areas, please see our curriculum and assessment policy - http://www.longcausespecialschool.com/policies/)
In addition to English learning across the curriculum, English sessions take place daily and pupils engage in reading based learning on a daily basis. We are supporting further learning and progress in reading as we begin to use 'Accelerated Reader'. Pupils can access online quizzes and build up points as they read more books. They will be encouraged to take a more independent approach to selecting books that they would like to read.
At KS4 pupils follow a Functional approach to English and Year 11 pupils will leave with an accredited outcome in English Functional Skills which will range from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. We also have a group of pupils studying GCSE English through the WJEC exam board.
